Principal’s Message

Dear New Prep Families,

It is with great pleasure that I write to welcome you and your child to a new school year at New Prep Middle School 8Q!  We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education. As partners, we share the responsibility for our children’s success and want you to know that we will do our very best to carry out our responsibilities. I am thrilled to be part of a team composed of teachers, staff, parents and scholars who want to achieve great things!

The following pages include important information about our school and our expectations for all scholars.  There are a few items that have been amended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  As the year progresses, we will update this handbook to remain in alignment and in compliance with the NYCDOE and with the CDC.  Please read this handbook and discuss its contents to make sure everyone in your household understands our school’s policies and procedures.  Our goal is to provide a safe and productive learning environment for all New Prep Middle School 8Q community members.

It is imperative that everyone abides by these policies and procedures. In order to create a positive home-school connection and set goals for our students and high expectations, families and school staff must work together as a team to provide students with the best education possible and guide them on their, “Journey Toward Excellence.”

We encourage you to speak with school staff members if you have any questions or concerns regarding the material contained in this handbook. Please complete and sign the declaration page found at the end of this document.

Sincerely,

Katiana Louissaint, Ed.D
Principal

OFFICIAL SCHOOL HOURS
The school hours for students at New Preparatory Middle School 8Q are 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

STUDENT DRESS CODE (Uniform Policy)
The New Preparatory 8Q community adheres to uniform.  Our uniform policy will be strictly enforced.  It is important that students wear the appropriate uniform attire, daily. We need the help of all school community members to support the uniform policy!  Students MUST be dressed for the day in school appropriate attire and pajamas are prohibited. Parents/guardians are asked to help enforce the policy by observing student’s attire before they join their remote classes online or leave home, making sure they are dressed in full uniform attire.  This policy is important as it provides safety and security for our adolescents.  The proper attire is listed on the next page.   The short/long sleeve polo shirts can be worn with Black or Khaki Pants – Girls and Boys, Black or Khaki Skirts/Jumpers – Girls

TECHNICAL & ACADEMIC SUPPORT FOR SCHOLARS

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY
Whether in person or remote, students are required to attend school each day.  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the minimum length of the school day for students is five (5) hours and thirty (30) minutes inclusive of a working lunch period.  As per the Chancellor’s Promotional Policy, students must maintain 90% attendance (no more than 16 days absent) in order to be eligible to pass to the next grade.  We applaud students and their families for perfect attendance!  Individual students will receive incentives for maintaining good attendance.  Additionally, homeroom classes that have excellent attendance will be rewarded with prizes, awards and other incentives throughout the school year.

LATENESS POLICY
Students will be marked late when they arrive after 8:35 a.m. It is important for all parents/guardians to make sure students arrive at school on time, each day whether instruction that day is provided in person or remotely. Parents of students who are absent for five days will be required to participate in a virtual parent conference.

TEACHER OFFICE HOURS
All teachers will be available remotely to parents or students from 2:00-2:20 daily in order to maintain the home-school connection and support individual students.  Virtual meetings can be requested by parents or students ahead of time, and teachers will use any time not previously reserved by parents or students during that period each day to outreach to parents about student progress.
